FAQ

Adult Martial Arts

Any sport or form of exercise comes with a risk of injury. However, there are a few things that make our program very safe. It's because of these few things that we barely see any injuries with our program.

Stretching: At the beginning of every class we go through a series of stretches. These stretches get your muscles and joints ready and warmed up for exercise.

Supervision: Every class is supervised by trained, certified professionals. We watch carefully to make sure no student is doing anything in a dangerous or unsafe way.

In short, we place a tremendous amount of focus on fun and safety. It's because of this that we feel confident telling you that while there is risk for injury with our program - it's a very small risk.

You'll get in shape as you go. You don't have to be in great shape to start.

The great thing about martial arts is you can be at any fitness level and do great. That's because there's no rush or pressure to do anything quickly. You can learn at your own pace.

If you have a knack for it, you can speed through techniques. If it's a bit harder for you, take your time. All we care about is that you're having fun, learning and progressing, and staying safe.

People often mistake self-defense for violence. We teach self-defense here.

Self-defense means doing everything in your power to AVOID violence! It means being diplomatic and peaceful. In fact, people who have had problems with violence in the past often become peaceful and balanced through martial arts.

Kickboxing

Both! Most members opt for group classes, but feel free to ask any of our instructors for more info on private sessions.
Normally around 15-30, with more instructors added as class size grows.
Yes! Our classes cater to people of all experience levels, and in every class there are people all over the spectrum.
Absolutely. Whether it's in the mini nutrition seminars we give during classes from time to time... or private consultations... we've got you covered.
No, our classes are extremely interactive, and involve real-life boxing equipment like punching bags & gloves. This is nothing like cardio kickboxing!

Krav Maga

Any! We have Krav Maga students who are in great shape, and others who aren't. Everyone has a great experience, and learns a ton in every class. Those who start out in not-so-great shape often get in shape very quickly. So if this is you, have no fear! Just come and enjoy Krav Maga.
If you have a medical condition, a past injury that required surgery and still troubles you from time to time, or anything else that may be of concern... Please speak to a medical professional before joining our classes.

Chances are you'll be more than able to come and enjoy learning Krav Maga. But there may be certain exercises that you'll have to take it slow on. Just let us know what your doctor says!

People often associate martial arts with violence. After all, you're learning self-defense techniques. However, there's a big difference between self-defense and violence.

Self-defense means you seek a peaceful way of life, only defending yourself if you absolutely have to. Violence means seeking out hostile situations.

While injury is possible with any form of exercise - we're proud to say that injuries are very rare here. We go to extreme lengths to make sure you learn Krav Maga in a safe, effective way.

Every one of our Krav Maga classes goes through a range of atmospheres. At times, it's highly focused and serious. At other times it's goofy and fun. We try to create a good mixture of both so you learn a lot while having fun.

Kids Martial Arts

No way! In fact, martial arts makes kids calmer and more respectful than ever. Martial arts always has been about peace, and it always will be.
Our program is extremely safe. We have measures upon measures in place to ensure that your child will stay safe, and have a great time. From stretching to warmups to very close supervision - we've got your child covered. Injuries do happen sometimes - but they're quite rare.
Yes! In fact, martial arts is kind of a beacon of light for kids who just don't fit into team sports. Kids who never could throw a ball well or run fast find that martial arts is accessible to them. It's something they excel at, and as a result, their confidence soars.
Kids have a blast here. There's smiling and laughter throughout every class. We have our moments of intense concentration and focus... but we always balance things out with fun and games to keep everything alive and light.
Yes! Martial Arts is a powerful source of confidence for kids. They practice hard and learn techniques in order to advance through the ranks. And as they advance, they fill with pride. After all, they're the ones doing all the work - so they feel all of the accomplishment whenever they learn a new move... achieve a new belt... or get praise from their fellow students and instructors.
Any age! Most kids range from 5 to teenagers, but we have kids who are younger, too. Classes are customized to suit children of different ages. A teenager receives very different treatment than a 6 year old, for example.
Martial arts are for boys and girls. Our classes have a good mix of both, too. So if you're worried about your girl being alone in a group of boys, wipe that worry from your mind!

Meet the Instructors

\r\n

Grand Master Don Rodrigues began his Martial Arts training in 1967 under the late Grand Master Nick Cerio. He has also studied and has been certified under the late Grand Master Ed Parker and by Grand Master George Pesare.

\r\n

He is the founder and President of the Don Rodrigues Karate Academy and the Oki-Ryu Kenpo system (since 1982) and currently holds the rank of 10th Degree Black Belt. Mr. Rodrigues was President of WAKO-USA (1991-2015), President of the Board of Directors of American Kenpo International and the Vice President of KRANE Ratings Inc. (New England’s premier Sport Karate ratings service).

\r\n

He is the publisher / author of “Finding the Funds” (marketing package), co-publisher of KRANE Ratings International magazine and was featured on the 1st edition of Action Martial Arts trading cards. Mr. Rodrigues has appeared in many magazines, national and international, including the cover of several National Martial Art publications.

Mr. Rodrigues enjoys teaching, coaching and promoting and is top-notch in all three categories! As an instructor, he has taught many World Champions and helped over 200 people reach their goal of Black Belt. His school is one of the best - and one of the largest - on the East Coast.

\r\n

As a coach, Mr. Rodrigues is noted as the best in the world. He has been coaching the best sport Karate team in the world, Team Paul Mitchell, for over 29 years. He is also the coach of the WAKO-USA 1991-2015. He has trained and coached over 200 competitors to over 300 world titles since 1985.

\r\n

In 2001, he was inducted into the Black Belt Magazine’s Hall of Fame as “Coach of the Year”.

\r\n

In 1997, he was awarded “Coach of the Year” by KRANE International and in 1995 by Inside Kung Fu Magazine’s Hall of Fame award. He has coached Team Paul Mitchell and the WAKO-USA Team all over the World.

\r\n

In 1998, he coached the US Sanshou Kickboxing Team in Beijing, China.

\r\n

As a promoter, he started promoting the Ocean State Grand Nationals 37 years ago and it has grown to one of the top 10 tournaments in North America. He also co-promoted the 9th WAKO World Championships in Atlantic City, NJ in 1993 and several nationally televised kickboxing events.

\r\n

He was the promotional director for the World Cup of Martial Arts, held in 1995 at Foxwoods Casino. From 1995 to present, Mr. Rodrigues has helped raise over $250,000 for Chuck Norris’ Kick Drugs Out of America / Kickstart program.

\r\n

In 2010, he co-produced the Action Martial Arts film “Champions of the Deep.” Mr. Rodrigues used many of Sport Karate’s Best in the film such as Caitlin Dechelle, Tyler Weaver, Dayna Huor and Dante Rodrigues.

\r\n

In 2011, Mr. Rodrigues was named to the Board of Directors for the International Kenpo Council of Grand Masters.

\r\n

Also in 2011, he became the International Coordinator of the World Cup of Mixed Martial Arts (WCMMA).

\r\n

With these and many other accomplishments, in 1999 Inside Kung Fu Magazine included Mr. Rodrigues as one of the great 100 people that made an impact on the Martial Arts in the 20th century!

\r\n

Grandmaster Rodrigues has been inducted into more than 30 Hall of Fames throughout his career.

Grandmaster Rodrigues, along with his student Shihan Alan D'Allassandro, developed the American Open Sword System, which they currently have more than 50 certified Black Belts in the AOSS.

\r\n

Grand Master Christine Bannon - Rodrigues is a 9th Degree Black Belt and the co-owner of the Don Rodrigues Karate Academy. She began her training in 1980 and is an instructor in Kenpo Karate, Kickboxing, Wushu and Krav Maga.

\r\n

Shihan Chris is said to be the best all-around female Sport Karate Competitor in the sport's history. She is a 9x WAKO world champion in forms, weapons and fighting, and holds a world record by being the only person to win a gold medal in all 3 categories at one world championship… and she did it twice!

\r\n

After retiring from competition, she was sought after to stunt double for some major film stars such as Hillary Swank (The Next Karate Kid movie) and Alicia Silverstone (Batman and Robin), just to mention a few. Shihan Chris has appeared on the cover of over 50 Martial Art magazines and has been inducted into dozens of Hall of Fames, including Black Belt Magazine and Inside Kung Fu Magazine's Hall of Fames!

\r\n

Shihan Chris has been hired by schools, tournaments and special events around the world to teach her skills that have made her a multi world champion. She also teaches many self-defense classes for women.

\r\n

Since the early 90s, Shihan Christine has been a product designer, spokesperson and model for Macho Martial Arts - a Martial Arts company that sells fighting equipment and uniforms to schools all over the world, based in Sebastian, Florida. She is also the Coach of Team Macho.

\r\n

Although she still enjoys doing stunt work from time to time and traveling around the world teaching seminars, performing or coaching her team, her main focus is teaching at Don Rodrigues Karate and trying to help all her students reach their goals and become the best that they can be.
